Kota Kinabalu is a popular tourism getaway and a major gateway into Sabah and Borneo Island.
Kota Kinabalu, alive and bursting with adventure, nature and culture, is definitely a place you can’t help but fall in love with at first visit.
Whether it’s waking up to the sound of the gentle waves crashing on the beach, experiencing the tranquillity of the best that nature has to offer, or even get caught in the hustle and bustle of its many famous markets, Kota Kinabalu has it all within easy reach.
Kota Kinabalu is within easy reach of long sandy beaches, paradise islands, virgin coral reefs, tropical rain forests; and the mighty Mount Kinabalu – the highest peak in Southeast Asia – is just 90 minutes away from the Kota Kinabalu city.
Kota Kinabalu is not only an instant resort city but also the perfect place for business, congresses and meetings. The business district is centrally located – with government, banks and commercial offices.
Kota Kinabalu’s climate borders between a tropical monsoon climate and a tropical rainforest climate. Two prevailing monsoons characterise the climate of this part of Sabah, the Northeast Monsoon and the Southwest Monsoon.
The Northeast Monsoon occurs between November and March with cooler temperatures and less rainfall, while the Southwest Monsoon occurs between May and September, which brings warmer temperatures and more rainfall. There are also two successive inter-monsoons from April to May and from September to October.
Temperature variation throughout the year is small. However, April and May are generally the hottest months, while December and January are often the coolest.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) provides flights linking the city with other domestic and international destinations. It is a secondary hub for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.
Kota Kinabalu is the second busiest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
